When the author should read their own book

Notes on why some memoirs gain everything in audio and others lose it.

An author reading their own memoir brings something no actor can: the memory behind each sentence. It does not always work. Writers are not trained performers, and a flat reading can make a good book feel long.

The memoirs that succeed share a few traits. The author has a natural speaking voice they trust, the prose is close to how they talk, and the director lets them keep their own rhythm instead of polishing it into a standard audiobook cadence.

Born a Crime and Becoming are both good examples, for different reasons. Noah performs; Obama converses. Both sound like the person who lived it.
