A short guide to full cast recordings

What changes when a book has dozens of voices instead of one.

Full cast recordings used to mean radio drama. Today the term covers everything from two narrators trading chapters to Lincoln in the Bardo, which uses 166 readers.

The benefit is clarity: in a book built from many testimonies, a new voice is a new speaker, and the listener never has to work out who is talking. The cost is intimacy. One narrator becomes a companion; a crowd stays a crowd.

If you are new to the format, start with a book written for many voices rather than one adapted to it.
