Best for: Anyone who bounced off the print edition, and fans of the films.
Dune has a reputation for being hard going, with its invented vocabulary and court politics. The full cast recording solves much of that. Brick narrates, while other actors voice the main characters, so you always know who is speaking in a scene with six schemers in it.
Light music and effects mark scene changes and the epigraphs that open each chapter. They are used with restraint and help with orientation rather than distracting.
Brick's narration is grand and steady, sometimes a touch slow. Many listeners will be comfortable at 1.15x.
At twenty one hours it is a commitment, but the final third, in the desert with the Fremen, rewards it completely.
What we loved
- ✓Full cast makes dense plot clear
- ✓Tasteful music and effects
- ✓Epic, immersive production
Worth knowing
- –Lead narration can feel slow
- –Very long
The verdict
The best way to experience Dune if you have struggled with it before.
