Best for: Fantasy fans who want a long book to live inside.

Rothfuss writes beautifully, and his prose sounds good aloud. Podehl reads with a young, eager energy that suits Kvothe the student, though it occasionally feels a little too light for Kvothe the older innkeeper.

The university chapters are the heart of the book and the most fun to listen to: rivalries, money troubles and lectures on magic that sound like real science.

This is a very long recording. Treat it like a seasonal companion for winter walks rather than something to finish in a week.

Note that the series is unfinished, which some listeners will want to know before committing.

What we loved

  • ✓Gorgeous prose read aloud
  • ✓Immersive magic school chapters
  • ✓Great value per credit

Worth knowing

  • –Extremely long
  • –Series unfinished
  • –Older Kvothe voice less convincing

The verdict

A cosy, immersive listen and excellent value for a single credit.
