Best for: A rainy weekend binge when you want to be fooled.

Jack Hawkins narrates Theo, the psychotherapist, in a soft and reasonable voice that makes him a comfortable guide. That comfort is the point, and the book exploits it beautifully.

Louise Brealey reads the diary of Alicia, the silent painter. Her chapters are cooler and more fragile, and the shift between the two voices gives the book a heartbeat: calm present, uneasy past.

At under nine hours with short chapters, this is one of the easiest thrillers to binge. It is ideal for a long flight or a rainy weekend.

The ending divides readers, but in audio, where you cannot flip back, it lands with real force. Many listeners immediately restart the first hour to catch what they missed.

What we loved

  • ✓Short and fast
  • ✓Two voices create real tension
  • ✓Twist works brilliantly by ear

Worth knowing

  • –Characters can feel thin
  • –Ending will not suit everyone

The verdict

Compact and gripping. One of the best value thrillers you can listen to.
