Best for: Music lovers and anyone new to full cast recordings.

The novel is written entirely as interviews, so a full cast is the obvious choice, and this recording takes full advantage. Each band member has their own actor, and the conversation between them feels like a real documentary edit.

Jennifer Beals plays Daisy with exactly the right mix of charisma and damage. The male lead, Billy, is the perfect counterpart: earnest, controlling and a little too sure of himself.

There is no actual music, which could have been a gimmick. Instead, the cast describes the songs so vividly you can almost hear them.

At nine hours it is the right length to binge over a weekend.

What we loved

  • ✓Superb ensemble cast
  • ✓Format perfectly suited to audio
  • ✓Easy, addictive listen

Worth knowing

  • –Large cast takes a chapter to learn
  • –Some characters thinly drawn

The verdict

A model for how full cast audio should work. Choose it over print.
