Best for: Listeners who want a glamorous, emotional page turner.

The novel is mostly Evelyn talking, and Cuervo plays her with a smoky, unhurried confidence that immediately convinces you this woman was a legend. Every confession feels like a performance she has been rehearsing for decades.

Julia Whelan voices Monique, the young journalist, and the two narrators make a satisfying contrast: Monique sharp and modern, Evelyn grand and knowing.

Short inserts of fictional news clippings are read by another voice, which gives the book the texture of a documentary.

This is one of the most binge friendly audiobooks we have heard. Expect to listen far past bedtime.

What we loved

  • ✓Commanding lead performance
  • ✓Two narrators create great contrast
  • ✓Very hard to stop

Worth knowing

  • –Some melodrama
  • –Frame story less gripping than Evelyn's

The verdict

Juicy, moving and beautifully performed. A perfect holiday listen.
