Best for: Book clubs and anyone who loves a memoir that reads like a novel.

Educated contains scenes of real violence, and an actor could easily play them for drama. Whelan does the opposite. She reads the worst moments almost quietly, the way someone describes a memory they have gone over many times, and that makes them far harder to shake.

Her voices for Westover's family are understated. The father is never a cartoon; he sounds certain and charismatic, which is the whole problem. Shawn, the brother, is given a softness that makes his turns more frightening.

The final third, set at Cambridge and Harvard, is more reflective, and Whelan shifts gently into a steadier, more adult register. You can hear the narrator growing up.

A content note: the book covers domestic abuse and serious injury. It is never gratuitous, but it is not light listening.

What we loved

  • ✓Award level narration
  • ✓Honest without being sensational
  • ✓Narrator voice matures with the story

Worth knowing

  • –Emotionally heavy in places
  • –Middle section moves slowly

The verdict

Whelan is one of the best narrators working, and this may be her finest recording.
