Best for: Curious listeners who want a big picture book for long drives.

Fifteen hours of history is a big ask. Perkins makes it manageable with a voice that sounds like your favourite lecturer: curious, dry, never in a hurry. Harari's provocations land better spoken aloud, with a slight lift that invites you to argue back.

The book is organised into four revolutions, and each section is self contained enough to listen to separately. This is a good book to pause between parts.

Some passages rely on figures and dates that are easy to lose in audio. You will not remember every number, but you will remember the arguments, which is what the book is for.

Production is plain. A little chapter music or clearer section breaks would help orientation in such a long recording.

What we loved

  • ✓Clear, confident narration
  • ✓Ideas made for discussion
  • ✓Easy to listen in sections

Worth knowing

  • –Long
  • –Numbers and dates hard to retain by ear

The verdict

A great first nonfiction audiobook, as long as you are happy to take it slowly.
