What it is

Audible, owned by Amazon, is the largest audiobook store in the world. Premium Plus gives you one credit each month for any title, plus unlimited listening to the Plus Catalog, a rotating library of thousands of audiobooks, podcasts and Audible Originals.

Catalogue

No other service came close on range. Every book we searched for was here, often with several recordings to choose from, and Audible Originals add exclusive productions you will not find elsewhere. The Plus Catalog is genuinely useful: we found well known titles in it, which stretches the value of the membership.

Pricing and value

At $14.95 a month, one credit costs more than Chirp deals or a library loan, but member sales regularly discount titles below the price of a credit. Audible's easy exchange policy also means you can swap a book you did not enjoy, which lowers the risk of each credit.

The app

The best app we tested. Smooth downloads, excellent CarPlay and Alexa support, clips, bookmarks, listening stats and a sleep timer that fades out gently. Whispersync with Kindle lets you switch between reading and listening.

The catch

Your books are protected by DRM and only play in Audible's apps and devices. That is fine for most people, but if you care about owning files forever, Libro.fm is the alternative.

What we loved

  • ✓Largest catalogue by far
  • ✓Excellent exclusive originals
  • ✓Best app experience
  • ✓Generous exchange policy

Worth knowing

  • –Books locked to Audible apps
  • –Credit price higher than deals elsewhere
  • –Plus Catalog titles rotate out

The verdict

The safest choice. If you listen to one book a month, Premium Plus is easy to recommend.
