Best for: Anyone trying audiobooks for the first time who wants the most free listening.

What it is

Audiobooks.com is a credit based audiobook store owned by RBmedia, one of the largest audiobook publishers in the world. Like Audible, you pay a monthly fee, get a credit, and use it on any book. The books are yours to keep, even if you cancel.

The trial

This is the headline. Most offers give new members thirty days and three titles, against Audible's single credit. In our test we picked three long books worth a combined forty hours, and all three stayed in our library after we cancelled on day twenty eight. If you only want to try one service for free, this is the one that gives you the most listening.

Catalogue and pricing

The catalogue covers almost every best seller we searched for, including new releases on launch day. You do not get Audible's exclusive originals, but for mainstream fiction and nonfiction we rarely missed anything. Premium costs about the same as Audible and adds a monthly VIP title chosen from a rotating selection, which is a nice bonus when you find something you like in it.

The app

The app is simple and fast. Downloads were reliable, the sleep timer and speed controls work well, and CarPlay support is solid. It lacks a few extras such as Audible's detailed listening stats, but nothing that matters day to day.

Who should skip it

If you mainly want Audible Originals, podcasts, or the very largest catalogue in the world, Audible is still the better long term home. If you want DRM free files, choose Libro.fm.

What we loved

  • ✓Three free titles on most trials
  • ✓Books are yours forever
  • ✓Clean, reliable app
  • ✓VIP bonus title each month

Worth knowing

  • –No Audible exclusives
  • –Fewer social and stats features
  • –Credits expire if you hoard too many

The verdict

The best way to start. Take the three free titles, then decide whether to stay.
