Best value for regular listeners
Best for: Book lovers who care about ownership and supporting independent shops.
What it is
Libro.fm is a credit based audiobook store that shares its profits with independent bookstores. You choose a shop when you sign up, and a portion of every purchase goes to them.
Ownership
This is what makes Libro.fm special. Books are DRM free, so you can download the actual audio files and play them in any app, back them up, and keep them forever, even if Libro.fm disappears. No other major credit service offers that.
Catalogue and price
Libro.fm carries books from all the major publishers, so we found almost every best seller we looked for. You will not get Audible exclusives. The membership is priced like Audible, and members get a discount on extra purchases, which adds up if you buy more than one book a month.
The app
The app is simpler than Audible's but does the important things well: downloads, chapters, speed control, sleep timer and CarPlay. It felt a little less polished, not worse.
What we loved
- ✓DRM free files you truly own
- ✓Supports local bookstores
- ✓Credits roll over
- ✓Discounts on extra books
Worth knowing
- –No exclusive originals
- –Simpler app
- –Trial is less generous than Audiobooks.com
The verdict
Our favourite Audible alternative. Same price, better values.
